In September, South Africa celebrated tourism month, according to STATS SA the number of visitors from foreign shores had increased by 12,4% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2017. This is encouraging growth and followed hot off the heels of a PWC survey that reported the travel and tourism sector is expected to contribute 9,4% to GDP next year.
All this positive growth highlights the importance of the travel and aviation sector to our country. At Mango Airlines, our goal is to keep airfares affordable so that more South Africans have access to travelling to all corners of our beautiful country, more often.
In terms of growth, Mango is proud to have reported a 1% year-on-year increase in ‘load factor’ for the period 2016-2017. What does this mean, you ask? Simply put, we managed to carry more of you, our wonderful Guests, per flight, than the year before. Passenger load factor is an important measurement tool for the performance of any airline when it comes to operational efficiency – something that Mango places high value on.
Investor Warren Buffett said "High load factors mean a fair amount of discomfort" but sorry Mr Buffet, you may know a lot about investing, but that is definitely not the case when flying Mango. Since the roll-out of our new and ergonomically efficient seating, our Guests concur that Mango offers more legroom than our competitors. On the fleet of new generation Boeing 737-800 aircraft that Mango operates, the new seat rollout means a saving of approximately 820kg in aircraft weight! This results in a decrease of 1,7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually! Mango has already reduced fleet weight by 270kg on each of our aircrafts with overall weight savings amounting to 1090kg each. Now that is something to shout out about.
Our aircraft undergo periodic inspections for safety – or what we term a scheduled major check. Not only is it an aviation regulatory requirement for all commercial aircraft to be maintained in accordance with an approved maintenance program to ensure their continued airworthiness, but it ensures that the aircraft are safe and reliable. This means expenses are incurred to make sure the fleet is not compromised in any way, shape or form. But money spent on maintenance is always money well spent … yes you can exhale, we have got you!
