KwaZulu-Natal for the adrenaline junkie

October 02, 2018

Yes, holidays are all about relaxing and unwinding. But for some, the most memorable travel experiences are the ones that get your pulse racing.

In KwaZulu-Natal, with its easy access to experiences in the bush, the Berg and the beach, there are plenty of opportunities to lounge amid idyllic settings. But fear not, adrenaline junkies – there are experiences that will let you get your thrills. Here are just a few …

Big Rush Big Swing, Moses Mabhida Stadium

There are many ways to enjoy Durban’s iconic stadium, which was built for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Jumping off the roof and swinging across the stadium bowl is certainly one you’re likely to remember for a very long time.

The stadium is located in Durban itself, a short distance away from its scenic promenade, so it’s quite easy to get to.

Safety: You’ll be strapped into a harness and have a safety demonstration before you’re guided through the long walk up the arch to the platform. Here, instructors will talk you through the jump, and, if you need it, help you take the leap!

The free fall is quite literally hair-raising, but you will definitely enjoy the swing. And as you’re slowly pulled back up, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the stadium.

Karkloof Canopy Tour

If you’re staying in Durban, this experience will include a scenic road trip nearly two hours outside of the city to the Karkloof Nature Reserve.

The canopy tour will see you travel across the reserve along a maze of ziplines, strung high above the trees, between a series of wooden platforms.

Safety: You’re strapped into a harness, and given gloves and a helmet (as well as a hairnet, if you have long hair). Guides are clear about the dos and don’ts of the zipline adventure, and you learn quite quickly how to slow yourself down or speed up along the line. If you lose momentum and end up dangling on the line, you’ll be pulled onto the platform.

Seafari, Ocean Ventures

Operating out of a small shop at Durban’s marine theme park, Ushaka Marine World, Ocean Ventures offer a range of sea adventures – from surfing lessons, to a “seafari” spotting dolphins and whales off the city’s coast.

If it’s excitement you’re after, the seafari is recommended.

It will see you help launch and then scramble onto an inflatable rubber boat, which will bounce from the crest of one wave to another in search of your cetacean friends. Take this trip between June and November to increase your chances of spotting a whale.

Safety: You’ll have a bright orange lifejacket, and be given strict instructions to hold on tightly. You’re likely to get drenched, so best to leave your phone behind.
