’Tis the season for holiday markets in Gauteng

With the school holidays and the festive season around the corner, a number of markets are springing up around the country. They offer the perfect opportunity to finish your Christmas shopping, to indulge in tasty treats or simply to spoil yourself with gorgeous crafts as the year draws to a close.

Here are a few Christmas markets not to miss in Gauteng this festive season:

Irene Village Market – Irene, Pretoria

The Irene Village Market has been a beloved tradition since 1989. Usually held only on the first and last Saturday of the month, it is happening every Saturday over November and December this year. Expect live music, incredible handmade and original arts and crafts, and a food section that will leave you stuffed with culinary delights.

Details: Every Saturday from 3 November to 16 December 2018, from 9am to 2pm.

Christkindlmarkt – Willow Park Manor, Pretoria

Christkindlmarkt is a traditional German Christmas market. Held at the Deutsche Internationale Schule in Pretoria, it will feature traditional German food stalls and  festive music in a venue brimming with Christmas decorations. If you’re a fan of stollen, this would definitely be the place to buy your favourite Christmas snack.

Details: On 1 December 2018, from 4pm to 10pm.

Bryanston Organic and Natural Market: Moonlight Markets – Sandton, Johannesburg

Another popular weekend market, the Bryanston Organic and Natural Market, is adding some extra Christmas flair to its offering with its Moonlight Markets, happening every Tuesday evening from 20 November to 18 December 2018. There will be more than 120 vendors selling top-notch handmade crafts and delicious eats over and above the elaborate entertainment line-up that includes magicians, jugglers, buskers, a Christmas-themed puppet show and Christmas carols.

Details: Every Tuesday from 20 November to 18 December 2018.

Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden Market and Christmas Carols – Roodepoort, Johannesburg

Over the first weekend of December, the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden will transform into an early Christmas wonderland with an extensive food and craft market during the day and Christmas carols in the evening. This year, the Welsh Male Voice Choir of South Africa will treat audiences to festive favourites such as Silent Night and Jingle Bells.

Normal entry fees to the garden apply on market days until 2pm, after which concert fees will apply. Live music will begin on each day at 4pm.

Details: On 1 and 2 December 2018, from 8am.

Bokkie Park Christmas Night Market – Boksburg, Ekurhuleni

Combine delicious treats, beautiful crafts and adorable animals and you’ll find a perfect day out at the Bokkie Park Christmas Night Market. Famous for its petting zoo, its camel and pony rides over the weekends and its free-roaming bunnies, the Bokkie Park is adding a Christmas theme to its last two craft markets of the year, happening on 24 November and 1 December 2018.

Don’t forget to drop off a few gifts for the little ones with Santa, who will make an appearance on the day!

Details: On 24 November and 1 December 2018, from 2pm to 10pm.

Emperor’s Palace Craft Market and Garden of Lights – Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni

The Emperors Palace Garden of Lights event has become one of Gauteng’s must-do holiday attractions. Step into a Christmas wonderland of lights and displays, sure to keep the whole family spellbound. And since it’s on display from the end of November until 2 January 2019, there’s no excuse to miss this spectacle!

While you’re visiting the Garden of Lights, be sure to pop into the craft market that runs daily from 9am to 9pm from 12 December 2018. Expect everything from toys and scrapbooking items to jewellery and decor essentials.

Details: The Garden of Lights is on every night from 30 November 2018 to 2 January 2019, from 7pm to 9pm (weather permitting). The craft market will take place every day from 12 December to 23 December 2018, from 9am to 9pm.
