Port Elizabeth, popularly known as PE or the Friendly City, is home to the third largest port in South Africa, but is better known for its long, sandy beaches that stretch across the Indian Ocean.

The city has a strong cultural heritage and is the ideal destination for taking a winter break because of its favourable temperatures. The quiet seashores, sailing venues and canoeing attract water lovers throughout the year.

While some parts of South Africa can experience a bitter cold season, PE residents and tourists can enjoy the great outdoors during winter.

Visit the Addo Elephant National Park

If you love nature and elephants, then visit the Addo Elephant National Park. It is South Africa’s third largest national park, and home to more than 600 elephants, the Big Five, and hundreds of species of birds.

Route 67

Route 67 showcases public artworks signifying Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of fighting for South Africa’s freedom. The artworks are designed by local artists from the Eastern Cape..

The route, which includes 67 steps, also celebrates Port Elizabeth’s culture and heritage, and is a great outdoor walking activity for the entire family.

Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve

Van Stadens Wildflower Reserve is a floral conservation area situated about 35km from Port Elizabeth.

Its primary aim is to protect the Eastern Cape’s indigenous and diverse flora. Tourists can explore the reserve by mountain bike, enjoy the walking trails and learn more about the environment from the education centre situated at the venue.

The location is an ideal area for family outings and those who enjoy cycling.

Port Elizabeth Athenaeum

The Port Elizabeth Athenaeum is a Provincial Heritage Site that was founded in the 1850s, primarily to promote cultural, scientific and social activities within the city.

It currently hosts conferences, workshops, exhibitions, theatre events and live performances.

The Athenaeum building is renowned for its classical style and architecture, and is regarded as the hub of Port Elizabeth’s modern arts, crafts and culture.

Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World

The Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World offers something for everyone. .  There is a wide selection of restaurants, retail stores for fashion lovers, an African market for buying beaded artworks, kids’ entertainment, a spa, and a cinema, among other things.

The Boardwalk is an open-air space with some sheltered areas. It has a central lake that lights up in the evenings, with classical music playing in the background.
